James Brinkley to Join Smith Barney as Vice Chairman

In his new role, Mr. Brinkley will work with his new colleagues atSmith Barney to help meet the tailored needs of the firm's clients,business owners and corporate executives. He will also serve as aspecial advisor to the Global Private Client Group's senior managementteam, focusing on specific transition and integration initiatives. Mr.Brinkley will report to Charlie Johnston, President and CEO of SmithBarney's Global Private Client Group.

Mr. Brinkley has served a distinguished career at Legg Mason WoodWalker, Inc. since the initial merger of Mason & Company and Legg &Company, which in 1970 combined to become Legg Mason & Company. Atthis time, Mr. Brinkley became a Director of Legg Mason & Company. In1985, Mr. Brinkley was appointed President and Chief Operating Officerof Legg Mason Wood Walker. Subsequently, in 2003, he became ViceChairman and CEO and in 2004 Mr. Brinkley was named Chairman of LeggMason Wood Walker. In his current role, Mr. Brinkley is Vice Chairmanof Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc. and a director of Legg Mason, Inc.

Mr. Brinkley has also held several key positions in securitiesindustry organizations, including roles as the former Chairman of theBoard of Directors of the Securities Industry Association, formerChairman of the District Business Conduct Committee of the NationalAssociation of Security Dealers and Trustee of the Securities IndustryInstitute. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics fromthe College of William and Mary in 1959 and received an HonoraryDoctorate of Humane Letters from the College of William and Mary inFebruary 2003. Active in his local community, Mr. Brinkley wasrecently honored as the Alex de Tocqueville Society Philanthropist ofthe Year. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors ofBusiness Volunteers Unlimited in Maryland.
