200 Teachers Selected to Attend the National Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy

The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy today announced that 200 third- through fifth-grade teachers from across the country have been selected to attend the national Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy to be held at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey. The selection of the teachers from applications submitted at www.sendmyteacher.com marks the first time that the five-year-old professional development program has chosen teachers from all 50 states.

To kick off the announcement, PGA golfer Phil Mickelson surprised Houston teacher Amanda Santana at The Rice School by announcing her selection at a school assembly.

"Having Phil Mickelson personally surprise me with this exciting news is an experience that I will never forget,” said Santana, a fifth-grade teacher at The Rice School in Houston. "I’m thrilled to be attending the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy this summer and look forward to learning new ways to teach math and science to my students.”

Teachers selected for the National Academy will participate in an intensive one-week, all-expense paid professional development program designed to provide them with innovative skills to teach math and science in the classroom The teachers selected through applications submitted at sendmyteacher.com were chosen by a panel of educators from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) based on their qualifications, dedication to inspiring students at an early age and overall commitment to enhancing the teaching profession.

"Given the overwhelming response from teachers seeking to enhance their understanding in math and science education we are thrilled to be able to host a truly National Academy,” said Phil Mickelson, co-founder of the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. "Working with ExxonMobil, we designed the Academy to be an exciting learning experience that will provide more teachers with tools to inspire students in these critical areas at such an important time in our nation’s history.”

In 2005, ExxonMobil partnered with Phil and Amy Mickelson, the NSTA and Math Solutions to launch the innovative, hands-on professional development program designed to help teachers engage students in math and science at an early age. Since its inception, the Academy has instructed more than 1,400 teachers from at the three annual Academies impacting more than 30,000 students. In addition to the National Academy, two additional Academies will also be held in Texas and Louisiana.

In April 2008, the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy launched an interactive Web site to expand professional development opportunities to teachers nationwide. Since its launch, more than 1,600 teachers from all 50 states logged on to the site to apply for the opportunity. Students were also encouraged to nominate their teacher to apply for the opportunity by sending an e-card or printing a teacher appreciation certificate from the site.

Based on the positive response the Send My Teacher site received from teachers, the Academy will extend the opportunity to teachers again this year. The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy encourages teachers to apply to attend the 2010 Academy by visiting www.sendmyteacher.com.
