Winners of AMD-Sponsored '64 Second Film Contest' Demonstrate 'Waitlessness' is Possible
AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the three winners in "The 64Second Film Contest," a test of creativity and digital mediadevelopment skill sponsored by AMD. The contest challenged contestantsto express the concept of "Waitlessness" in a 64-second short film tohelp showcase how AMD Athlon(TM) 64 X2 dual-core processors "shatterthe hourglass," by taking content creation and multimedia performanceto a new level. Today's digital content creators are using AMD Athlon64 X2 dual-core processors to create more, while spending less timewaiting for their computers to render videos and perform othermultimedia tasks.
"We were thoroughly impressed by the creativity and talent of thecontestants' submissions in The 64 Second Film Contest," said BobBrewer, corporate vice president, Desktop Division, AMD. "The spectrumof entries and the ingenuity they displayed raised the bar for what ispossible with today's multi-core technology."
The grand prize went to John Robson of Canoga Park, CA for hisfilm, "At a Glance," which captures the feeling of "Waitlessness" withlove at first sight. He will receive a grand prize package thatincludes an editing studio with furniture and an AMD Athlon 64 X2dual-core processor-based digital video/audio "Dream System" providedby Voodoo PC, with peripherals. Also included in the system is Nero 7Ultra Edition, a powerful software suite, offering both the PC and TVmedia management experience for a complete digital media solution, aswell as a Sony(R) software package including Vegas(R), Sound Forge 8and Acid Pro 5. As part of the package, Robson will also receive anall-expense-paid trip to California, where he will receive a privatetour of the DreamWorks Animation studios which includes meeting ananimation artist, a special pre-screening (sneak preview) of anupcoming movie, a private screening of his contest submission, and asigned sketch of a DreamWorks character.
Alexander Oyler of Phoenix, AZ was awarded first place for hisfilm, titled "Volo di Icarus," which depicts abstract perceptions oftime. He will also receive an editing studio with furniture, as wellas an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor-based Dream System providedby Velocity Micro.
A third Dream System, provided by ABS Computer Technologies, Inc.,was awarded to the second place winner, Steven Bastyr of Los Angeles,CA whose short film "Change" demonstrates the power and ability tobreak free with dual-core technology.
"Traditionally, processor technology has been measured inmegahertz ratings and then application performance," said CharlieBoswell, director of Digital Media and Entertainment. "In addition tosignificant performance benefits and greater creative freedom, AMD64technology now represents a shift in the creative marketplace in whichthe technology is now more accurately measured by what creativeindividuals like 64 Second Film Contest winner John Robson do withit."
A pool of 28 finalists was selected by popular vote online atwww.64seconds.com. The winners were then chosen from the finalists bya panel of judges including Daniel Gregoire, CEO and president ofHalon Entertainment, a company specializing in digital effects formajor films including "Star Wars: Episode III, Revenge of the Sith"and "War of the Worlds"; Dave Chaimson, vice president of marketingfor Sony Media Software; Dave Hill, vice president of technology forSony Media Software; and Douglas Spotted Eagle, a giant in the videoand audio industries who has received numerous awards including aGrammy, Emmy, DuPont, and Peabody. Judging criteria includedcreativity, originality, technical excellence, and the best expressionof the concept of "Waitlessness."
"Each of the 28 finalists put on a dazzling display of creativityand originality," said Gregoire. "Ultimately it came down toexecution, and that's where the talent and skills of our prize winnersreally shined through. It was a tough decision, and a lot of fun.Congratulations to all of our finalists on a really great effort."
