Where To Use Apple Pay To Buy Gasoline
(RTTNews) - ExxonMobil has launched Apple Pay support within its Speedpass+ iOS app, allowing iPhone owners to pay for gas or car washes using their smartphones.
iPhone customers can use Apple Pay at more than 6,000 Exxon and Mobil-branded gas stations across 46 US states from today. The service will be added to about 2,000 more locations by summer. The company aims to make the service available across all of its 10,000 locations by the year-end.
"Anything that involves the pump from a hardware point of view takes years to deploy and is extremely expensive," Bryant Russell, Americas program manager for mobile payment and loyalty at ExxonMobil, said during a demo of the app at the San Mateo gas station, according to report in Cnet.
ExxonMobil's Speedpass+ app uses GPS to check the exact location a user is at and asks which pump they are using. The user has to confirm the purchase using the Touch ID. In locations where GPS does not work well, users can scan a QR code or manually search for the pump in the app.
Once the payment is finished, users will have "about 45 seconds" to start fueling their car or Speedpass+ will time out and require users to start over from the beginning.
