Norfolk Southern Honors Two Employees for Marketing, Service Accomplishments

NORFOLK, Va., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Two employees have earned Norfolk Southern's highest honor, the Thoroughbred Award, for their contributions to the company's long-term success.

Tom Landrum, national account manager, Roanoke, Va., led a marketing and sales team that increased Norfolk Southern's participation in the growing ethanol market. He positioned NS as a transportation and supply chain partner with major ethanol suppliers and distributors in New York and the Southeast. Landrum's leadership helped ethanol traffic increase 59 percent in 2004, with more gains expected in 2005.

Craig Marin, manager transportation planning and budget, Atlanta, developed a scorecard to assist Norfolk Southern's Transportation department with tracking expenses, train performance and service. The scorecard provides information that enables rail yards to improve customer service and reduce costs.

Seven other NS employees were nominated for the award:

Bill Faulhaber, manager training, was nominated for his quick response to the need for increased employee training as NS business levels increased in 2004. He is responsible for operations at NS' technical training center in McDonough, Ga.

Dave Wyatt, system engineer public improvements, Atlanta, worked with local and state governments in Elkhart, Ind., to coordinate a significant grade separation project.

Norfolk Southern won new chemical business as the result of the work of Clinton Collins, national account manager, Roanoke, and Bill Flanagan, product manager, St. Louis.

Greg Harkey, manager business development, Roanoke; Steve Blinn, account manager, Chicago; and Tim Mann, business solutions manager, Norfolk; developed a strategy to increase NS' participation in the transportation of large machinery, and the team branded a new logistics product, MACH ONE Machinery Service.

"These individuals are examples of the best of Norfolk Southern," said John Samuels, senior vice president operations planning and support. "Their ingenuity and their ability to work toward solutions that benefit our customers and our company show their commitment to continual improvement."
