MARKET OVERVIEW

Friday saw the cup and handle breakouts on both the Dow and S&P 500 Index. Fueling the rally was 262,000 new jobs created in February, well above the 225,000 that most were expecting. The big question now is -- can the gains in the equity markets hold? On the surface the breakouts look good, but a closer look shows that volume was lacking, not exactly a positive sign. If the breakouts are to hold, then we will need to see volume pick up as well.

It's a quiet day on the economic data front, as there aren't any major reports due out today. Earnings are slowing to a crawl as well. Don't expect much in terms of news today, instead look for a continuation of Friday's rally and be sure to pay close attention to the volume.

DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

For just the second time in the last nine months, the real job figures actually topped economists' estimates. While commentators expected the US economy to generate around 225,000 new jobs in February, the number finished at 262,000 -- the most since October 2004. This is a healthy sign, since it indicates that more companies have greater faith in the economy and are thus hiring more employees as their businesses expand. Monster Worldwide, which operates the hugely popular Monster.com job website, reports that job postings from employers rose to a record in February. The 262,000 figure was also significantly above the 132,000 jobs created in January, and means that over the past three months, job growth has averaged a solid 183,000 per month. The service sector added the bulk of the new positions -- 207,000 in total. But it was heartening to see the construction and manufacturing sectors tack on 30,000 and 20,000 new workers respectively, with the latter reversing the 20,000 jobs shed in January. However, not all the news was upbeat, with the unemployment rate surprisingly rising from 5.2% to 5.4% -- a situation that promptly saw the already fragile Dollar weaken a little further. In early morning trade last Friday, the euro had strengthened 0.8% to US$1.32 against the dollar. Also causing some concern was the fact that hourly earnings remained flat at US$15.90 in February. Over the past 12 months, wage growth has risen just 2.5%, less than the 3% rise in consumer prices. Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped consumers spending. The 3.8% spending growth rate in 2004 was the most since 2000, and the rate is projected to be up 3.3% during the current quarter.
