    SunPower Corp., a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY), today announced that it will be hosting a free public workshop on solar electricity for commercial and residential sites on Saturday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m., featuring speakers from Horizon Energy Systems, OnGrid Solar Energy Systems and SunPower. Co-sponsored by the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club, this workshop will provide an overview of leading photovoltaic (PV) systems, highlight the financial benefits with case studies and discuss the environmental impact of solar-electric systems.

    About the Speakers

    Andy J. Black is a solar electric consultant and owner of OnGrid Solar Energy Systems. Mr. Black has more than eight years of design, consulting, teaching, and research experience in solar technology. He specializes in demonstrating the financial payback of solar electricity systems, and is a NABCEP certified solar installer. Mr. Black is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Solar Energy Society and serves as Chapters Representative. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern California Solar Energy Association and serves as its Treasurer. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University, a master's degree from the University of Southern California, and has completed a marketing certificate program at the University of California.
    Vikas Desai is a product manager for residential markets at SunPower Corp. Before joining SunPower, Mr. Desai was employed by the Control Techniques Division of Emerson Electric, a leader in high-performance industrial automation products, where he headed up global product management and customer support groups. Mr. Desai holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley, a master's degree in power electronics from Loughborough University in the U.K., and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Gujarat University in India.
    Kurt Newick works in sales and installation at Horizon Energy Systems. He is founder and chairman of the Global Warming and Energy Committee for the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club. He is also a Tree Amigo with Our City Forest. He lives in a solar electric home, with a self-installed solar-radiant heat and solar hot water systems. Mr. Newick holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Chico State University. Over the past few years, he has taught free classes about solar electric systems and has volunteered with Silicon Valley Solar Home Tours.
