    Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2005--The New York Times today named John Tierney an Op-Ed columnist. His columns will appear twice a week, starting in April.
"John is a smart reporter and innovative thinker who will always come up with an unexpected take on the issues of the day," said Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of The New York Times. "He delighted us as a metro columnist, and as the 'Political Points' writer during the 2004 election. We're looking forward to seeing what he does in this new format."
Previously Mr. Tierney, 51, wrote about New York in the "Big City" column of The New York Times, which ran for eight years, first in The Times Magazine and then twice a week in The Times's Metro Section.
Since joining The Times in May 1990, Mr. Tierney has been a general-assignment reporter, a staff writer for the magazine and a columnist. He wrote the weekly "Political Points" column during the 2004 presidential campaign.
He is the author of "The Best-Case Scenario Handbook" (Workman Publishing, 2003), a work of humor, and is also the co-author, with Christopher Buckley, of a comic novel, "God Is My Broker: A Monk Tycoon Reveals the 7 1/2 Laws of Spiritual and Financial Growth" (HarperPerennial, 1998).
The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT), a leading media company with 2004 revenues of $3.3 billion, includes The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, The Boston Globe, 16 other newspapers, eight network-affiliated television stations, two New York City radio stations and more than 40 Web sites, including NYTimes.com and Boston.com.
