DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Back in 1990, US healthcare costs totaled US$696 billion. In 2004, that amount had swelled to US$1.7 trillion -- 15% of annual GDP. But by 2014, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says that figure will soar to US$3.6 trillion -- a 4% rise from current levels and accounting for a remarkable one- fifth of the economy. It will also represent just over US$11,000 for every man, woman and child in the country -- more than double today's costs. Such rapid inflation will easily outpace regular GDP growth, placing an increasing strain on the nation's already ailing healthcare infrastructure. But more importantly, rising healthcare costs mean rising insurance premium costs -- costs that will remain higher than incomes. This doesn't bode well for the more than 40 million Americans already lacking adequate healthcare coverage. Elsewhere, investment expert at the 247profits Group Brit Ryle notes that the US Dollar continues to take center stage: "Although South Korea clarified its intent to diversify its currency reserves, the potential for foreign central banks to start dumping their dollars has the markets struggling. But I think the fear is overblown, in part because Japan can't sell its dollars. Japan depends on a weak Yen to stimulate economic growth. And the country's economy has contracted for three straight quarters, with exports slowing and the trade surplus plunging 60% in January. If Japan starts selling dollars, it will surely boost the yen. And that's something Japan just can't afford to do. There's no telling how long this fear of a big "dollar dump" will last. But Wall Street seems to have a two-week attention span. So perhaps we can get some bullishness going this week."
