Microchip Technology Launches Two Low Pin Count dsPIC30F 16-bit dsPIC Digital Signal Controllers for Space-Constrained Applications 18-Pin Package is Industry's Lowest Pin-Count 30 MIPS Device
Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, today announced that it has begun volume production of two 16-bit dsPIC(R) Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) that offer designers performance speeds of 20 and 30 Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS), self-programming capabilities via Flash memory, and industrial and extended temperature ranges. The dsPIC30F3012 and dsPIC30F3013 sensor family devices feature 24 Kbytes of Flash program memory and can operate at full speed using an internal oscillator. The devices are offered in 18-pin (dsPIC30F3012) and 28-pin (dsPIC30F3013) packages as small as 8x8 mm QFN, and are ideal for sensor processing or other applications that can benefit from high performance in a small form factor.
Distributed sensor processing is becoming popular as a means to offload tasks from aging 32-bit central processors, or to move processing closer to the sensor for reducing noise induced between the sensor and processor. The dsPIC30F3012/3013's unique features provide an ideal solution for distributing intelligence to individual sensors. Applications for the new DSCs include: glass-break detection, automotive knock detection, interface to MEMS sensors and gyroscopes, and gas-detection systems.

Microchip's dsPIC DSC combines the high performance of a 16-bit Flash microcontroller with the computation and throughput capabilities of a digital signal processor (DSP). The dsPIC DSCs have the "heart" of a 16-bit microcontroller with robust peripherals and fast interrupt handling capability, and the "mind" of a DSP that manages high-computation activities, creating the optimum single-chip, single-instruction-stream solution for embedded system designs. This allows designers to integrate functions and save board space.
The dsPIC30F3012/3013 are able to operate from 2.5 to 5.5 volts, which is valuable for noise immunity or minimizing voltage translation logic. Microchip's Enhanced Flash self-programming capability permits remote upgrades to the Flash program memory, allowing code revisions in end-users' applications. Additional key features include:
