McDonald's Sorry For Szechuan Sauce Debacle, Promises More
(RTTNews) - Following Saturday's botched promotion of very limited Szechuan Sauce, McDonald's said sorry to disappointed Rick and Morty fans and has promised to bring it back soon.
In a one-day promotion, McDonald's quickly ran out of its extremely limited supply of packets of special Szechuan sauce, creating outrage from long-waited fans of the animated sci-fi comedy series "Rick and Morty." A huge number of fans had waited hours in line, but were left empty-handed.
On Saturday, McDonald's apologized for the whole debacle. In a twitter post, the burger chain said, "The best fans in the multiverse showed us what they got today. We hear you & we're sorry not everyone could get some super-limited Szechuan."
Then, late Sunday, the company said it would bring back the Szechuan sauce this winter a lot more, and at more locations, for more than just one day. "We want to make this right," the company said in a statement.
"You spoke. We've listened. Lots more #SzechuanSauce and locations. Details soon," it said.
The huge demand for special Szechuan sauce was created by "Rick and Morty," which airs on Adult Swim on Turner Broadcasting's Cartoon Network, which has a huge fanbase. An episode earlier this year featured Rick and Morty, a sociopathic scientist and his grandson, in an adventure trying to obtain the rare McDonald's Szechuan dipping sauce. It was said to be a real-life promotion tied to the 1998 release of the Walt Disney Co. movie "Mulan."
McDonald's re-released the sauce on Saturday for just one day for "Rick and Morty" fans. But, supplies quickly ran out as most stores only had a few packets on hand.
As per reports, following the very limited supply in the shops, a secondary market emerged online, which offered a single packet of the sauce anywhere from $18 to $449.99, and a three-pack was going for $848.88.
