Mayor Anthony Williams, Centex Homes Break Ground on Danbury Station

CHANTILLY, Va., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Centex Homes will take the lead in the District's Bellevue Revitalization Effort on Tuesday, April 19 when the area homebuilder breaks ground on a $15 million townhome development at the intersection of South Capitol and Danbury Streets, SE. Nearly $1 million in demolition expenses within a blighted area of Washington, DC has made way for Centex Homes' latest construction project, Danbury Station.

The groundbreaking will take place during a ceremony at 10 am on site. Mayor Anthony Williams, whose administration has made improving DC communities among the top priorities, will be on hand to speak and show his support. Councilmember Marion Barry, Commissioner Maria Powell and Ronny Salameh, Maryland Division Manager of Centex Homes, are also scheduled to speak at the event.

Affordable housing has been identified as the cornerstone of an effort to improve some of the city's more troubled areas, as mentioned in Mayor Williams' 2005 State of the District Address. "This year, we will launch our New Communities Initiative to transform our most distressed neighborhoods," Williams said during his address entitled Lifting All Communities. " ... We're not talking about a few more dollars here or there. We're not just talking about bricks and mortar. We're talking about an innovative and holistic approach to creating healthy neighborhoods."

Danbury Station will offer 119 residential units, 24 of which have been leveraged at a lower price to afford current lower-income community members a chance at homeownership. The community's construction is slated to be complete by winter of 2007.
