Janus Reports Higher Assets under Management in February

    Business Editors

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2005--For the month ended February 28, 2005, Janus Capital Group Inc. (NYSE: JNS) reported total assets under management of approximately $134.4 billion, which is up 1.3% from the prior month's assets of $132.7 billion. Firmwide average assets under management during February were approximately $134.4 billion compared with January's average assets of $133.6 billion, an increase of 0.6%. Excluding money markets, average assets in February were $125.1 billion, up 0.9% from January.
Total long-term (non-money market) net outflows were $0.6 billion for the month. Excluding INTECH, Janus' long-term net outflows in February were $1.2 billion, an improvement from $1.4 billion in January. The main catalyst for the February improvement was Janus' growth equity products, which had their lowest net outflows since August 2003.
Janus' relative mutual fund performance remained strong in February. As of February 28, approximately 70% of the funds in the company's primary fund family, Janus Investment Fund (JIF), were in the top half of their Lipper categories on a 1-year, total-return basis. In addition, more than 64% of the JIF funds were in the top half of their Lipper categories on a 3-year, total-return basis at the end of February. Of particular note, 8 of the 11 growth and core funds with a three-year track record were top quartile performers in their respective Lipper categories on both a 1- and 3-year total-return basis (see Exhibit 2).
The attached Exhibit 1 shows Janus' assets and flows by investment discipline for December, January and February. Exhibit 2 provides detailed Lipper rankings for the JIF funds.
Please note that following the March news release, scheduled for April 11, 2005, assets under management and flows will be reported on a quarterly basis as part of Janus' earnings news release.
