ARAMARK Awarded Contract to Manage Food Services at the School District of Philadelphia
Under the agreement, which consistent with USDA guidelines, has aminimum term of one year and is renewable for an additional fouryears, ARAMARK will manage food services in select elementary, middleand high schools. ARAMARK will also provide all vending and cateringto the District. The contract is estimated to generate $120 millionin revenue over five years.
"ARAMARK will enable the District to deliver high qualitynutrition and increase choice and participation in our meal programsin 115 of our schools," said Natalye Paquin, Chief Operating Officerfor the School District of Philadelphia. "In the last few years theDistrict has made a concerted effort to improve the quality of meals,snacks and drinks not only in our lunch rooms but also in our vendingmachines. This partnership with ARAMARK will enable us to expand ourcommitment to improve the nutrition of all our children."

In the coming months, the students of the School District ofPhiladelphia will benefit from ARAMARK's proprietary, award-winningdining programs: the One World Cafe, 12 Spot and U.B.U. Lounge. Theseresearch-based brands are designed to reflect the habits, choices andnutritional requirements of today's elementary, middle and high schoolstudents. The 12 Spot and U.B.U. Lounge were recently recognized byNation's Restaurant News magazine with the 2005 MenuMasters Award forBest On-site Operator Menu. In addition, ARAMARK's elementary schooldining program was honored with the Best Kids' Menu award fromRestaurant Hospitality magazine.
Students will be exposed to ARAMARK's nutrition awarenessprograms, such as A.P.P.L.E.S., Treat Yourself Right, FUEL and Spike.
A.P.P.L.E.S. (Activity Plans Providing Learning Experiences forStudents) offers lesson plans focusing on topics such as dietaryissues, exercise and nutritional analysis that the teaching staff andon-site food service staff can utilize for nutrition education. TreatYourself Right is a secondary level communication program focused onreinforcing a healthy lifestyle message.
This year, the District will be implementing FUEL, a campaigndesigned to increase nutritional awareness among middle and highschool students. The program's healthy messages are communicated tostudents in various ways.
The District's youngest students will be introduced to Spike,ARAMARK's elementary level nutrition mascot. Spike has a regularpresence in districts ARAMARK serves.
