COLOMBIA: Former Venezuelan Prosecutor Is Under Government Protection

(RTTNews) - Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos confirmed that the former Venezuelan prosecutor Luisa Ortega, who arrived in Bogotá last Friday with her husband, the representative Germán Ferrer, "is under government protection."

"The prosecutor Luisa Ortega is under the protection of the Colombian government. If she asks for asylum, we will grant her," added Santos on Twitter.

Ortega was removed from office on August 5 by the National Constituent Assembly (ANC) installed by Nicolás Maduro. Venezuela's ANC has not been recognized by several governments in Latin America.

Ortega had criticized what she called a "breach of the constitutional order in Venezuela," in addition to criticizing the action of the public force to contain demonstrations that left more than 100 dead in the South American country.
