Intel's Core Microarchitecture Redefines Computing; Intel Sets New Records in Performance and Energy Efficiency

Intel today disclosed record breaking(1) results on 20key dual-processor (DP) server and workstation benchmarks. The firstprocessor due to launch based on the new Intel Core(TM)microarchitecture -- the Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5100 series, previously codenamed "Woodcrest" -- delivers up to 125 percentperformance(2) improvement over previous generation dual-core IntelXeon processors and up to 60 percent performance(3) improvement overcompeting x86 based architectures(4), whilst also deliveringperformance per watt leadership.(5)

"The performance and system-level power consumption we're seeingfrom our platforms built around the new Core microarchitecture hasexceeded even our expectations," said Kirk Skaugen, vice president andgeneral manager of Intel's Server Platforms Group. "At the same time, customers demand more than just energy-efficient performance. We'vedeveloped a superior platform that delivers the latest servertechnologies including faster and more reliable memory, IntelVirtualization Technology, Intel Active Server Manager and Intel I/OAcceleration Technology."

Fully-buffered dual in-line memory (FB-DIMM) technology allows forbetter memory capacity, throughput and overall reliability. This iscritical for creating balanced platforms using multiple cores and thelatest technologies, such as virtualization, to meet the expandingdemand for compute headroom.

Shipping in Intel Xeon MP processors since last year, IntelVirtualization Technology provides silicon-level software support thatimproves dependability and interoperability and is enabling fasterindustry innovation. Intel Active Server Manager integrates hardware, software and firmware to manage today's complex datacenters andenterprise environments. Intel(R) I/O Acceleration Technology improvesapplication response time, server I/O performance and reliability.

Intel's new server and workstation platforms, codenamed "Bensley"and "Glidewell" respectively, are architected for today's dual-coreprocessors. They will also support dual- and quad-core processorsbuilt using Intel's 65-nanometer (nm) and future process technologies.

The first processors for Bensley and Glidewell are in theDual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5000 series, previously codenamed"Dempsey." Shipping since March at a new low price point, they bringinnovation, higher performance and lower power consumption to thevalue server and workstation segment.

Complementing the 5000 series, Intel will ship the next processorfor Bensley and Glidewell in June -- the Dual-Core Intel Xeonprocessor 5100 series. Based on the Intel Core Microarchitecture, themajority of these processors will only consume a maximum of 65 watts.

Using the SPECint(TM)_rate_base2000(a) benchmark, which measuresinteger throughput, a Dell PowerEdge 2950(a) server based on theDual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5100 series scored 123.0, setting a newworld record(6).

Using the SPECjbb(TM)2005(a) benchmark, the Fujitsu-SiemensPRIMERGY RX200 S3(a) server based on the Dual-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R)processor 5100 series broke the previous record with a score of 96,404business operations per second(7).

An HP Proliant ML 370 G5(a) server based on the Dual-Core IntelXeon processor 5100, and using the TPC(TM)-C(a) benchmark, whichmeasures database performance, smashed another world record by scoring169,360 tpmC at $2.93/tpmC(8).

IBM(a) is also in the record books with the IBM System x3650(a)server based on the Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5100 series, whichscored 9,182 simultaneous connections in the SPECWeb(TM)2005(a)benchmark, which measures web server performance(9).

Other leading benchmarks on Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5100series-based servers include Lotus Domino(a) (R6iNotes(TM)), MicrosoftExchange Server 2003(a) (MMB3(TM)), SPECfp(TM)_rate_base2000(a) andSAP-SD(TM) 2-Tier(a).

These benchmarks, along with additional records set by theDual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5000 and Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor5100, can be accessed by visiting www.intelstartyourengines.com.
