Yahoo! Appoints Hilary Schneider as Senior Vice President of Newly Formed Yahoo! Marketplaces Business Unit; Former Knight Ridder SVP will Oversee Division to Leverage Classified Listings Assets
In this newly created position, Schneider will develop anoverarching classified and listings strategy that includes new ways ofmonetizing transaction listings across Yahoo!, as well as haveday-to-day oversight of Yahoo!'s Marketplaces properties in the U.S.,including Autos, Classifieds, HotJobs, Personals, Real Estate,Shopping & Auctions, Travel and Yellow Pages.
Schneider will be based in Sunnyvale, Calif., and will report toYahoo!'s executive vice president of finance and administration andchief financial officer, Susan Decker. Her appointment is effectiveSeptember 18, 2006.
"Hilary has extensive experience in both the operational andtechnological aspects of classifieds and media businesses that willenable her to provide important strategic direction to our newMarketplaces group," said Decker. "By organizing all of theseproperties under Hilary's leadership, we believe that we are ideallypositioned to leverage our current assets to take advantage of thesignificant growth potential in this large and rapidly growing onlinespace."
Prior to joining Yahoo!, Schneider was senior vice president forKnight Ridder Inc., a $3 billion revenue company, where she co-managedthe newspaper operations and led its digital division. Under herleadership, Knight Ridder's online revenue tripled and the division'sprofit margins grew significantly. Additionally, Schneider has alsoserved on the boards of CareerBuilder, Classified Ventures, ShopLocaland NAA.
"I believe Yahoo! has the audience, products, technology andgo-to-market assets necessary to win in the online classifieds andlocal listings segment," said Schneider. "I'm excited to capitalize onYahoo!'s existing strengths of the properties and to develop andexecute a strategy to take these businesses to the next level."
Prior to Knight Ridder, Schneider was president and CEO of RedHerring Communications, where she oversaw Red Herring Magazine,RedHerring.com and Red Herring's events unit. She was also presidentand CEO of Times Mirror Interactive, where she oversaw all of TimeMirror's Internet businesses, including more than 34 of its websites.Schneider also served seven years with The Baltimore Sun Company in anumber of positions across new business development, sales &marketing, and culminating in the post of general manager in which shesuccessfully led all of Sun's business operations, growing bothrevenue and operating profit. Additionally, Schneider worked for anumber of years as vice president of corporate finance for DrexelBurnham Lambert, Inc. where she primarily focused on financing andacquisition transactions in the media and entertainment industry.
Schneider holds a B.A. in economics from Brown University and anM.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
