Thinner PS4 On The Way

(RTTNews) - Electronics giant Sony Corp. (SON.L) reportedly plans to launch a new slimmer version of its gaming console PlayStation 4 next month.

Sony expects the new console, unofficially dubbed the PS4 Slim, to help the company maintain demand for the console. The console, however, will have the same specifications as the original PS4 but will sport a new thinner design. According to a WSJ report, the new slim model will be sold at a cheaper price.

The original PlayStation 4 was launched in 2013 and was a huge success with more than 40 million units shipped so far. The nearest rival, Xbox One, has only sold about 20 million units since its debut in 2013.

Sony will also launch a high-end version of PlayStation next month, with improved graphic capabilities and other features, targeting hard-core gamers.

Sony has scheduled a news conference at the PlayStation Theater in New York on September 7.
