The New York Times Announces Joseph Nocera as New Business Columnist
Publishing Writers/Business Editors
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2005--The New York Times announced today that Joseph Nocera, editorial director for Fortune magazine, will become its latest Business Day columnist. He will join Floyd Norris and Gretchen Morgenson as a regular columnist in the section, with his first column appearing this spring.
"Joe is a large talent with a provocative perspective on business journalism," said Bill Keller, executive editor of The New York Times. "He is a well-respected journalist with an articulate voice on complex stories. We welcome him as a colleague."
As editorial director for Fortune, Mr. Nocera, 52, conceived, wrote and edited numerous cover stories, and helped manage Fortune's editorial staff. Some of his most acclaimed feature stories included "Fatal Litigation," his account of the battle between plaintiffs' lawyers and Dow Corning over the silicone breast implants; "The Buzz Factory," an inside look at the business of Conde Nast; and "Heard on the Street," the story that first exposed the rift in the family that owns the controlling stake in Dow Jones. Mr. Nocera's coverage of the Microsoft antitrust trial was widely praised. He also anchored the 1997 Frontline documentary, "Betting on the Market," which aired on PBS.
Mr. Nocera joined Fortune in 1995 as a contributing editor and served as editor-at-large from 1996 to 2001. From 2001 to 2002, he was executive editor before being named editorial director in 2002. Mr. Nocera also serves as a regular business commentator for National Public Radio's Weekend Edition Saturday.
From 1991 to 1995, Mr. Nocera was the "Profit Motive" columnist at GQ. He wrote the same column for Esquire from 1988 to 1990. During the 1980's, he served as a contributing editor at Newsweek; as executive editor of New England Monthly; and as senior editor at Texas Monthly. From 1978 to 1980 he was an editor at The Washington Monthly.
Mr. Nocera has received many prestigious journalism awards, including two Gerald Loeb awards and three John Hancock awards. In 2000, TJFR (The Journalist and Financial Reporting newsletter), named him to its list of "100 Business News Luminaries of the Century." His 1994 book, "A Piece of the Action" (Simon & Schuster), won the 1995 New York Library's Helen Bernstein Award as the best non-fiction book of the year. In 1983, Mr. Nocera was a finalist for a National Magazine Award for his Texas Monthly story about Boone Pickens' first takeover attempt.
In addition to "A Piece of the Action," Mr. Nocera has edited a collection of Texas Monthly business stories, entitled "Bidness." In 2003, he led a team of Fortune journalists who wrote the best-selling book about the Enron scandal, "The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron" (Portfolio, 2003). Mr. Nocera's stories have appeared in several anthologies, including "Literary Journalism: A New Collection of the Best American Nonfiction" (Ballantine, 1995), and "The Best Business Stories of the Year, 2002 Edition" (Vintage).
Mr. Nocera earned a B.S. in journalism from Boston University in 1974.
