Sony Develops Algorithm To Write Music Just For You

(RTTNews) - Sony Computer Science Laboratory in Paris is developing a system of algorithms that can create new music based on a person's musical preferences and interests, Reuters reported.

The system, christened as Flow Machines, will have a database of sheet music of more than 13,000 existing songs. From this list, the user can choose any number of titles with a sound or feel they would like for the new song.

The algorithm analyzes the songs' rhythm, pitch and harmony, and creates a partition or lead sheet with similar characteristics, the report said. The algorithms would make sure that the new songs are different enough to avoid plagiarism.

Director of Sony CSL in Paris, artificial intelligence expert Francois Pashet, reportedly said the system expands the songwriting process. "It allows one to try many things much more easily. You can mix, you can try one style with another style with a sound," Pashet said.

Flow Machines has created a song called "Daddy's Car" on the styles of The Beatles. To create the tune, the system analyzed about 45 songs.

CSL started developing Flow Machines since 2012, and reportedly working with French composer Benoit Carré, testing how it adapts to his own songwriting.

It is expected that the CSL team would launch albums with songs created entirely by artificial intelligence.
