Plum Creek Earns Recognition for Wildlife Conservation Practices from
Business Editors
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 2005--Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc. (NYSE:PCL) has been recognized by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and the Georgia State Department of Natural Resources as a 2004 Forestry for Wildlife Program (FWP) Partner for the company's outstanding contributions to the state's wildlife and wild places. FWP is a voluntary annual program designed to promote the integration of wildlife conservation into corporate forest management practices.
Plum Creek practices sustainable forestry using techniques that protect wildlife on all of its timberlands -- approximately 8 million acres in 19 states. The company manages more than 950,000 acres of timberlands in Georgia and employs more than 90 people in the state. Some of the approaches deployed by Plum Creek to become a FWP Partner in Georgia include:
-- | Preparing wildlife conservation plans. |
-- | Providing internal training opportunities for employees on how to blend forestland management with "wildlife friendly" practices for multiple natural resource benefits. |
-- | Incorporating wildlife management techniques into forest management practices and land use planning. |
-- | Providing valuable data for state research projects. |
-- | Providing public research opportunities on corporate forestlands. |
-- | Participating in various partnerships with conservation organizations. |
-- | Managing riparian forests for wildlife use and water quality protection. |
"We have set the bar very high for natural resource conservation in Georgia," said Georgia Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Noel Holcomb. "I'm pleased that Plum Creek has responded by participating in this innovative partnership. The number of acres added to the Forestry for Wildlife Program has continued to increase since its inception in 1999, and as a result, the future of wildlife on more than 2.9 million acres of industrial timberland is much brighter."
"Plum Creek is proud to be accepted into the Forestry for Wildlife Program," said Rick Holley, president and chief executive officer. "I want to thank our foresters in Georgia who practice sustainable forestry each day while protecting wildlife. All of Plum Creek's timberlands have been independently certified to the standards of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative(R) (SFI) program. This approach combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality."
Plum Creek is one of the largest private timberland owners in the nation, with approximately 8 million acres of timberlands in major timber producing regions of the United States and 10 wood products manufacturing facilities in the Northwest.
