ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2005--Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) announced today that its Motiva(TM) interactive healthcare platform has received a 2005 Medical Design Excellence Award.
Motiva, being developed by Philips Medical Systems, will deliver remote patient management and personalized education through the home television. The system uses broadband technology, combined with vital-sign measurement devices, to connect patients to their healthcare providers and medical support team. It is designed to improve quality of life, while reducing medical costs, for patients with chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure and diabetes.
The Motiva platform provides patients with relevant, multimedia healthcare information--educational videos, medication reminders, personalized messages and surveys from their caregiver-- and vital sign trend charts to track progress towards personal goals. The content is accessed via an easy-to-use interactive television interface, delivered via a broadband TV connection, and a remote control specially designed for older users. A nurse care manager can also monitor the patient's condition from a remote location using the Motiva clinical application.
"We faced the challenge of designing a new way to deliver personalized healthcare information into the elderly patient's home. The Motiva platform incorporates the best features of both an engaging television experience and an educational computer program," said Neal Goldberg, senior manager, development engineering, for Philips Medical Systems.
Reflecting a whole company approach, the product development team benefited by leveraging the expertise of various organizations within Philips:

-- Philips Applied Technologies, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for the TV program software development

-- Silicon & Software Systems (S3), Dublin, Ireland, a member of the Philips Corporate Technologies group, for the clinical software development

-- Philips Design, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in conjunction with Schematic, a leading interactive agency in Los Angeles, for the development of the iTV user interface concept.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition is organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated by an independent panel on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery, and features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient. 2005 Medical Design Excellence Award winners will be honored at a ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) Conference, June 13-15, 2005, in New York City.
