Philips Medical Systems, a division of Royal Philips Electronics(NYSE:PHG; AEX:PHI), today will demonstrates a comprehensive portfolioof advanced Information Technology (IT) solutions at the 2005Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting. Theseadvanced IT solutions seamlessly integrate and share a patient'smedical record across all stages of the patient care cycle, includingin the patient's home. Philips IT solutions enable patients' medicalinformation to be distributed throughout the hospital, helpinghealthcare organizations move closer to the realization of electronichealth records (EHR) in the U.S.

The integration of iSite Picture Archiving and CommunicationSystem (PACS) from Stentor (now Philips Global PACS business) withfront-end diagnostic systems, and the Philips Xtenity platform, delivers a comprehensive healthcare IT solution. Xtenity enhancescommunication and information sharing between referring physicians, radiologists and other members of the healthcare team. They can haveaccess to their patients' health history throughout the enterprise, and anywhere, anytime access with Xtenity Provider Portal from a PCwith a web browser. The Xtenity Patient Portal brings EHRs into thehome and allows patients to actively participate in their healthcaredecisions. The web-based portal offers a variety of self-serviceoptions giving patients the ability to request appointments, checkmedications, view lab results and learn more about their medicalconditions.

A recent study by the Rand Corporation indicated that computerizedmedical records could save the United States more than $81 billionannually through greater efficiencies and reduced errors.(1) The studyfound that electronic medical record systems could save money byreducing redundant care, speeding patient treatment, improving safetyand keeping patients healthier.

"One of the big challenges of realizing electronic health recordsin the U.S. is the lack of hospital IT systems and medicaltechnologies that communicate with each other and thus share criticalpatient data," said Oran Muduroglu, CEO, Healthcare IT, for PhilipsMedical Systems. "We design and deliver medical solutions with open ITarchitectures that enable our systems to communicate with othermanufacturers' systems to optimize patient care. Ensuring thatphysicians have access to all critical patient information at thepoint of care is vital to patients' well being. Delivering on thisvision required bringing together best-in-class technologies from allaspects of healthcare."

Industry researcher Gartner Group has pointed to the fact thatdated IT architecture and applications in hospitals, as well as thediversity of incompatible applications available, are impeding changesin the U.S. healthcare system that could reduce costs and improvepatient safety. In a 2005 report, they stated that "IT is an essentialpart of the healthcare ecosystem, and...done right, IT can save time, effort, lives and even the organization.(2)"

Experience the Patient Care Cycle

Philips illustrates the flow of information across the care cyclethrough the story of an anonymous patient navigating the critical pathfrom home-to-hospital and back home again. Philips will demonstratetheir approach to patient-centric care by showing at RSNA howhealthcare IT, the modality and the patient-clinician relationshipcombined in one integrated cycle of care promotes quality care, optimizes efficiency and impacts patient satisfaction.

We begin with the patient at home, experiencing pain but empoweredto initiate the care cycle using Xtenity Patient Portal to request anappointment with their primary care physician. The patient accessestheir EHR from home, completes a visit with the primary carephysician, gets referred to Computed Tomography (CT) for a diagnosticprocedure, and then closes the loop when the physician communicatesthe results back to the patient at home.

The tight integration of the Philips healthcare IT solution isfurther highlighted through the availability of the patient's healthrecord directly at the CT console in the radiology department. Thistype of access to the health record assists radiologists and radiologytechnicians to plan more accurate and effective exams, and helpprevent the possibility of errors.

Additional efficiencies are illustrated when the images areimmediately available to radiologists for reporting and diagnosisusing iSite PACS integrated with Xtenity Enterprise, allowingreal-time communication of results back to the primary care physicianfor treatment planning, and finally to the home so that the patientcan better understand their condition.
