Google Maps Drops Unpopular Cupcake-Counter

(RTTNews) - Google has confirmed that it has removed a feature from its Google Maps that notified users how many cupcakes they would burn if they walked a certain distance due to negative feedback from users.

The feature was a test feature for iPhone users only and will be removed later tonight from the app. The feature showed users how many calories they could burn if they walked a route instead of driving it.

The feature showed Google Maps users the calorie count on the map if the driving directions are requested by the user to cover a short distance. But, if an user has already selected walking, the calories count are shown in the step-by-step directions, but not the map.

"This walk burns around 313 Calories — that's almost 3 mini cupcakes," said a message within the app's walking directions.

However, the tech giant is ditching the feature after receiving strong negative customer feedback.

According to many, the feature could be a trigger for the estimated 30 million Americans with eating disorders.
