Earnings Flow Picks Up Pace After Disappointment From Banks
(RTTNews) - After Alcoa (AA) kick started the reporting season with forecasting beating-results, there was very little to cheer about from the bank earnings released last week. About 16 S&P 500 companies reported earnings last week and of these, about three companies, including financial service giants J.P. Morgan (JPM), Bank of America (BAC) and Citigroup (C) reported below consensus bottom line results. Most other banks, though performing above expectation, saw their bottom line impacted by huge charges and lower trading revenues. The rest of them reported either in line or above consensus earnings.
The earnings flow picks up this week after Monday' public holiday in observance of 'Martin Luther King Jr. Day.' More financial and tech earnings could predominate the earnings release calendar of the week, although companies from other sectors, including Dow components Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and McDonald's (MCD), are also scheduled to release their quarterly scorecards. After being roiled by economic uncertainties, the Street may look for earnings respite, as it seeks to regain the momentum it witnessed for most of 2014.
