Constellation Energy Contributes $1 Million to Establish BGE Heating System Replacement Program

Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) today announced that it is donating $1 million to the Baltimore Community Foundation to establish the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) Heating System Fund, which will provide new, energy efficient furnaces to qualifying limited-income customers in Baltimore in need of a heating system replacement.

"Constellation Energy is pleased to expand our partnership with the city of Baltimore and the Baltimore Community Foundation by helping working families in Baltimore make substantial improvements to their home heating systems,” said Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy. "This program is designed to assist limited-income households that do not qualify for existing energy assistance programs but are nonetheless struggling to make ends meet during this severe economic downturn. For these families, a new, efficient furnace can mean lower bills during the winter heating season. We’re proud to be working together with the city of Baltimore on a program that will make a real difference for limited-income families.”

The BGE Heating System Fund, to be launched in November, will provide furnace replacements to qualified households above income eligibility levels for state utility bill assistance grants. The eligible household income level will be set at the qualifying amount for the Maryland Weatherization Assistance Program.

"The best way for families to ensure long-term financial security is to learn how to use their resources efficiently and significantly curb energy-wasting habits,” said Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. "Constellation Energy is committed to helping low income residents take advantage of energy-saving technology and conservation methods to make their homes more affordable. They are a model of good corporate citizenship for other Maryland businesses to follow.”

"The BGE Heating System Fund supports BGE’s strong commitment to energy conservation and efficiency, and to helping those limited-income families throughout BGE’s service territory,” said BGE President Kenneth W. DeFontes Jr. "We know firsthand that old or inefficient heating systems are the single biggest contributor to excessive home energy usage and resulting high electric bills. We’re grateful to Mayor Dixon and her administration’s leadership, as well as the strong support of the Baltimore Community Foundation. Working together, we are confident that we’ll have a real and meaningful impact on those who might otherwise not be able to avail themselves of safe and energy-efficient electricity use this coming heating season.”

Furnace Replacements and a New Song Contest

Included in the $1 million donation to BGE’s furnace replacement fund, Constellation Energy also announced that it will support a project aimed at spreading the word about energy conservation. The "Rap the Gap” contest will encourage students in participating public high schools to compete in a song-writing contest focused on what households can do to lower household energy consumption.

The contest was developed through a partnership of the city of Baltimore, the Baltimore City Public School System and the CollegeBound Foundation. The winner will be awarded a scholarship toward college expenses.

Tom Wilcox, president of the Baltimore Community Foundation, said, "We applaud Constellation Energy for once again demonstrating its strong philanthropic support for those in need. And we are proud to work with Constellation Energy, BGE and the city of Baltimore to ensure families throughout our community have available to them a safe, reliable and efficient source of heat to make it through this winter and in the coming years.”
