Casio-Hitachi Designs Two New Wireless Handsets with Lightning-Fast Spansion NOR Flash Memory
Spansion LLC, the Flash memory venture of AMD (NYSE:AMD) andFujitsu Limited (TSE:6702) today announced that Casio Hitachi MobileCommunications has developed two new cellular handsets with 512 Mb NORFlash memory, which uses stacked versions of Spansion's WS256N, a NORFlash memory device based on the company's award-winning MirrorBit(TM)technology. The new G'zOne and A5512CA mobile phones developed byCasio-Hitachi and available now in Japan integrate 80 MHz versions ofthe Spansion WS256N, the fastest frequency using two-bit-per-celltechnology. In addition, Spansion has proven that the WS256N hasheadroom to spare, providing a platform for wireless designs withfrequencies up to 108 MHz.
"The WS256N is the latest example of how Spansion leveragesMirrorBit technology to deliver the right mix of performance, reliability, cost-per-bit and density based on application needs,"said Hans Wildenberg, corporate vice president of the WirelessBusiness Unit for Spansion Japan. "These two new handsets from Casioshowcase the powerful multimedia features that can be realized withincreased code storage capacity and performance."
The WS256N is the only mass production two-bit-per-cell 80MHzproduct available today, and allows mobile handset designers tomaximize the potential of wireless chipsets by pairinghigh-performance Flash memory and logic to rapidly process everincreasing millions of instructions per second. As a result, designerscan adequately store and manage the growing amount of code needed todeliver increasingly feature-rich phones with advanced multimediafeatures. Fast read speeds can also help to enhance the end userexperience by enabling faster boot times and camera shoot times.
The robust cellular handsets developed by Casio-Hitachi feature upto 64 megabytes (MB) of code storage for advanced multimediafunctions. Both phones integrate a 1.28 megapixel camera, expansivetelephone and address databases, mapping/navigation functions andvideo capabilities.
"Spansion's Flash memory is designed for advanced chipsets --making it possible for handset manufacturers to producehigh-performance cell phones," said Kenji Iwahara, Team Leader of theHardware Design Group within the Development and Design headquartersat Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. "Since end userscontinue to demand ever faster content transmission and more newfunctions, cell phones will likely continue to have to accelerateprocessing speeds and increase the amount of code data they store."
About the WS256N Family of Wireless-Optimized NOR Flash MemoryDevices
The Spansion(TM) WS-N Flash memory family features 512, 256-, 128-and 64-megabit burst products operating at 1.8 volts in single-die andMCP configurations. The family maximizes value for customers byallowing them to leverage a single phone platform for high-end,mainstream and value models. The device is shipping at 80MHz in volumeto numerous customers in the wireless market.
Spansion has also proven the performance of the device atfrequencies up to 108 MHz, enabling customers to use the WS256N todevelop even higher performance next-generation wireless designs. Moreover, by maintaining hardware and software compatibility acrossproduct families, Spansion allows customers to use the 110 nanometerWS256N as a development platform today, and easily migrate to higherperformance, higher density devices based on 90 nanometer processtechnology as they become available. The company expects to deliver asingle-chip 90 nanometer 512Mb device optimized for the wirelessmarket in early 2006.
About MirrorBit(TM) Technology
Spansion's award-winning MirrorBit(TM) technology is a proprietarytechnology, which stores two bits of data in a single memory cell, doubling the density of each memory cell. MirrorBit technologyrequires fewer manufacturing steps, resulting in higher yields andlower costs, eliminating at least 10 percent of the totalmanufacturing steps and 40 percent of the most critical manufacturingsteps, as compared to floating gate MLC NOR technology.
