Cadillac CT6 To Feature Video-Streaming Rear View Mirror
(RTTNews) - General Motors Co.'s (GM) Cadillac plans to introduce a rear-view mirror that can stream high-resolution video in order to help the driver get a better rearward view without the obstruction of passengers and headrests.
Cadillac plans to introduce the new technology on the 2016 Cadillac CT6, when it goes on sale late next year.
Cadillac claims the streaming video mirror will improve field of vision by about 300 percent, or roughly four times greater than a standard rear-view mirror.
Meanwhile, the automaker has not completely ditched the traditional rear-view mirror as drivers can disable the video streaming function by flipping a toggle on the underside of the mirror which will revert to a traditional mirror.
"The closest comparison to this kind of rear vision would be driving a convertible with the top down," said Travis Hester, Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer.
GM claims the camera's video feed reduces glare and allows a crisper image in low-light situations compared to a traditional glass electrochromatic, or auto-dimming, rear-view mirror. The mirror has a 1280x240 pixel TFT-LCD display that is connected to an HD camera, which has a water-shedding hydrophobic coating applied to keep it clean.
