Best Buy Quickly Apologizes For Joke About 1999 Baltimore Murder

(RTTNews) - Best Buy is apologizing for a tasteless tweet referencing a 1999 Baltimore-area murder.

"Serial," a weekly podcast from the creators of "This American Life," recently examined a case involving the death of a woman in the parking lot of one its stores fifteen years ago.

The conviction of Adnan Syed for the murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee hinged on testimony from a man claiming Syed called him from a pay phone at the Best Buy asking for help disposing of the teen's body.

The podcast raised questions about whether there was in fact a pay phone at the Best Buy location.

Best Buy tweeted Thursday, "We have everything you need. Unless you need a pay phone. #Serial"

Not long after, the company deleted the tweet and offered its apologies.

"We deeply apologize for our earlier tweet about Serial. It lacked good judgment and doesn't reflect the values of our company. We are sorry."

A spokesperson for the company later said: "We posted a tweet earlier that was clearly in poor taste. We deeply apologize for the tweet about Serial. It lacked good judgment and doesn't reflect the values of our company. We have tweeted an apology and taken down the offensive tweet."
