Balfour Beatty WorkPlace Delivers Its Employer Promise with Support from StepStone Solutions

Balfour Beatty WorkPlace (BBW) part of Balfour Beatty Plc, one of the UK’s largest providers of buildings and facilities management services, today announced a strategic implementation of StepStone Solutions’ talent management suite which will span across BBW and its associated companies (Romec, Covion, CTH). The StepStone solution will cover Resourcing, Succession Planning and Performance Management, and will initially be rolled out to all managers. BBW employs some 14,000 employees across the UK.

StepStone’s solution will support an overhaul of Balfour Beatty WorkPlace’s talent acquisition and engagement management strategies as it moves from generally paper-based processes to a wholly computerised approach. Following this move the solution is expected to help Balfour Beatty WorkPlace recover the cost of the investment in the first year and then achieve expected cost savings of £50,000 in year two. The roll-out has further enabled BBW to deliver on its Employee Promise by giving employees the ability to manage the careers they want to have within the company.

Just four months after implementation BBW has implemented online 360 Degree Feedback at a saving of £200 per head. A further saving of £50,000 a year is projected as a result of increasing its internal promotions and therefore cutting the costs of agency fees associated with external recruitment, all made possible as the company’s succession planning strategy becomes more sophisticated and the business gains greater visibility of its current talent.

Additionally the automated performance management process will enable online performance reviews. BBW is expecting a higher quality of End of Year Performance Appraisals in 2009, compared to 2008.

Balfour Beatty Workplace Managing Director, Kevin Craven says: "I take a particular interest in what my managers have pledged to achieve through their objectives, the progress they are making and whether their Line Manager is giving the support and encouragement to succeed. The ability for me and my board to review in ‘real time’ the performance of our managers, discuss succession plans, and foresee future resourcing requirements while conducting gap analysis and ‘what if scenarios’ has enabled us to significantly improve the way we manage our people.”

Caroline Gammon, Senior HR Manager at Balfour Beatty WorkPlace comments: "Our business depends on the quality of our talent. This means making the right hires, and also helping our people to build long-term careers with us. StepStone’s solutions provide us with the vital insights we need to become a truly performance driven organisation, and have enabled us to put our employees back in the driving seats of their careers with us. We are delighted with the efficiencies we have seen to date, and look forward to more shared success with StepStone in the future.”

Matthew Parker, Group Managing Director, StepStone Solutions adds: "Our on-demand talent management solutions make it possible for blue-chip organisations like Balfour Beatty WorkPlace to gather, analyse and disseminate actionable intelligence on an organisation’s talent profile. This means our customers can start to use their talent strategically, identifying the skills and capabilities they need to help their businesses grow, while helping ensure employees remain engaged and loyal at the same time. Balfour Beatty WorkPlace’s story is a great example of how to get talent management right, and we applaud its team for the successes to date.”
