Americans With Hearing Loss Delay Care; FEBC Will Offer Benefit to Streamline Hearing Care
SAN RAMON, Calif., Dec. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Millions of Americans have hearing loss and many more are at risk. But of the 40 million American adults who experience hearing loss, almost a third of them aren't getting the help they need, according to a recent study. Additionally, a Consumer Reports survey revealed that 71 percent of respondents with hearing loss delayed buying hearing aids. The cost of purchasing a hearing aid, according to the survey, was usually in the thousands, sometimes upwards of $5,000. The Financial Education Benefits Center will be offering a hearing benefit to eligible members to help make hearing care easier for members with hearing loss.
"Hearing loss is a big issue in the United States and many people are not prepared to address it," said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. "This new benefit will help make the cost of care easier to handle, and it'll make the choices for dealing with their hearing loss clearer."
The high cost of a hearing aid can be attributed not just to the device itself but to a fitting, follow-ups and cleaning. These follow-ups could be instrumental in the success of the device. Hearing aids ordered online and self-installed may be cheaper, but they aren't necessarily fine-tuned to the hearing needs of the individual. The upcoming FEBC benefit will not only make purchasing the right hearing aid easier but will help make in-person follow-up care easier too.
Another hurdle to hearing care is that people may not be aware of their vulnerability to hearing loss. Furthermore, those who are already experiencing hearing loss might either be in denial about it or simply not aware. Hearing loss exists on a spectrum from mild to profound. Gradual hearing loss may not be obvious to the person experiencing it. While hearing aids may seem like the domain of the elderly, people of all ages experience hearing loss and FEBC members of all ages will be able to take advantage of this upcoming hearing benefit.
And while illness and genetics may cause issues with hearing, loud sounds are a big threat to Americans' hearing. From loud music to construction site commotion to firearm blasts, loud noises are a home, workplace and recreational health hazard. Even daily public transit use could put people at greater risk. The upcoming hearing benefit will help make hearing loss easier for people to understand and, subsequently, address.
"We're trying to empower people to get better care for themselves," said Martinez. "Caring about your hearing is important, and it shouldn't be a complicated process. It shouldn't be an intimidating process either. And so we will be rolling out this benefit to help make it simple, and make it more welcoming."
