Addison-Wesley Professional Announces Publication of Mashup Patterns
Addison-Wesley Professional today announced the publication of Mashup Patterns: Designs and Examples for the Modern Enterprise, a book that aims to help organizations unlock the potential of mashups, which Gartner, Inc. describes as one of the most disruptive technologies that will affect IT through 2012. Mashups are built by combining parts of other applications and data together to create new solutions.
Author Michael Ogrinz helps readers explore how mashup platforms can be leveraged within the enterprise to help both seasoned developers and non-technical end users tackle seemingly intractable challenges as well as seize new opportunities. Ogrinz applies the concept of patterns -reusable, repeatable solutions- to reveal the right ways to build enterprise mashups and to provide useful insights to help organizations avoid the mistakes that can cause them to fail.
The book begins with an introduction to mashups, patterns, and related terminology, and addresses the emergence of Web 2.0 and its impact on the enterprise. As Ogrinz states, "Whereas Web 1.0 was about transactions, Web 2.0 is about interactions. Enterprise users are no longer content to passively receive products from IT. They are ready to become creators themselves.” Mashup Patterns also looks at the relationship between mashups and corporate portals, service-oriented architecture (SOA) and enterprise application integration tools.
The heart of the book consists of 34 patterns organized into five separate categories (see below). These patterns are further classified by a series of core functions to help firms in selecting the right mashup platforms to suit their particular objectives. Each pattern is accompanied by a variety of practical examples spanning different industries and use-cases. Presented in an easy-to-read format, these make the text approachable to readers at all levels of an organization.
The 34 patterns’ categories are:
- "Harvest”: Mine one or more resources for unique data (i.e. "Alerter” pattern: use intelligent monitoring agents to detect changes to a resource and communicate appropriate notifications)
- "Enhance”: Extend the capabilities of existing resources (i.e. "Accessibility” pattern: Construct an alternative application interface with no effects on the original code base)
- "Assemble”: Remix existing data and interfaces to serve new purposes (i.e. "Communication and Collaboration” pattern: Combine internal communication products to solve new problems related to interruption overload)
- "Manage”: Leverage the investment in existing assets more effectively (i.e. "Content Migration” pattern: Migrate information from one or more applications to a new environment)
- "Test”: Verify the performance and reliability of applications (i.e. "Audit” pattern: Use mashups to create an aspect-oriented view of application usage)
An entire chapter dedicated to "Anti-Patterns” will help firms steer clear of common pitfalls when establishing a mashup environment. Critical issues surrounding security and governance are also addressed. Ogrinz concludes with twelve case studies from leading firms to illustrate how these organizations have used mashups to implement a range of patterns and achieve positive return on investment.
"Enterprise mashups unleash the information locked in a company’s systems and the creativity trapped within its employees to allow anyone to quickly meet specific business challenges. With current market conditions forcing many firms to do more with less, mashups are an essential tool if a company wants to stay competitive,” Ogrinz said.
