5 Tips to Help Teach Your Kids How to Swim
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., May 25, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Pool fencing company, LOOP-LOC, shares five tips for teaching your kids to swim.
Summer time is all about fun. One of the best ways to have fun this summer is to swim. Swimming is great exercise and it's the go-to recreational choice for kids. Teach your kids to be fantastic swimmers and they will have developed a lifelong skill. And, if you have a pool, make sure that your pool is surrounded by a quality pool fence. This adds an extra layer of protection. Here are five tips to help teach your kids how to swim this summer.
Start with the basics. Your starting point in teaching your children to swim will depend on the ages of the children and their comfort with water. If they are young or have little comfort in water, start by acclimating them to the water. This includes things like blowing bubbles and being comfortable putting the face in the water without going under water.
Only use coastguard approved floats. While kids are learning to swim, resist the temptation to deck them out in "floaties." These are blown up with air. They pop and deflate. Two undesirable situations if your children are weak swimmers. Instead, opt for a life jacket or a coast guard approved flotation device suitable for learning to swim. These floatation devices have the coast guard approval information on them.
Work on floats early. It's important that children know how to rest in water if they get into trouble. This means that they need to know how to float. There are two floats. A front float and a back float. Make sure they know how to do a back float first.
Instruct them on pool safety. Teaching kids how to swim isn't just about water skills, it's also about how to enter the water and behave near water. Make sure your kids understand that they should never enter the water head first. Teach them how to enter the water safely. This means, sitting down, turning and slowly dropping into the water or using a feet first jump. Always know what's in the water before entering it or swimming in deep water.
Teach the front crawl in stages. Once your kids are comfortable with the basics and can float in water, you can start thinking about teaching strokes. Start with freestyle or the front crawl. And, start with one aspect of that stroke. Typically, it is easier to start with learning to kick because you can use the side of the pool or a kickboard for assistance.
