COLOMBIA: Country And UN Sign Agreement For Special Mission
(RTTNews) - The Colombian Ambassador to the United Nations, María Emma Mejía, and the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, signed an agreement to establish the second Special Political Mission in the South American country.
The mission was approved by the Security Council of the United Nations Organization on July 10 to verify the process of political, economic and social reincorporation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) former guerrillas. The rebel organization was disarmed and transformed into a political party after a peace agreement signed in 2016.
The new U.N. Mission in Colombia will also maintain 70 observers to monitor the temporary ceasefire between the government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group, enacted on October 1.
