Veeco's BioScope II AFM Selected by the Institute Pasteur De Lille

Veeco Instruments Inc. (Nasdaq: VECO), a leadingsupplier of instrumentation to the nanoscience community, announcedtoday that its recently introduced BioScope(TM) II, an innovative,high-performance atomic force microscope (AFM) designed to facilitateadvanced bioscience research, has been selected for purchase by theInstitute Pasteur de Lille. The Institute Pasteur de Lille is aprivate, non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention andtreatment of disease through research, education and public healthactivities, and is a member of the international network of thePasteur Institutes which has campuses in Lille and Montpellier,France. In addition, Veeco will establish a life sciences lab in theInstitute's facility, and will provide bio-applications scientists andother technology resources to the Institute.

Dr. Frank Lafont, Group Director, Cell Microbiology and PathogenicInfectious Diseases, Institute Pasteur de Lille, stated, "The BioScopeII's superior resolution and ease-of-use with optical microscopes madeit the clear choice for our advanced cell biology research.Furthermore, Veeco's commitment to the bio-research community throughapplications support, dedicated life scientists, and access todevelopment teams made them the right partner for the InstitutePasteur de Lille. It is the Institute Pasteur de Lille's intention tocontinue to forge links between academics and industry in the areas ofcell biology research in order to further the treatment of infectiousand other diseases, as evidenced by this collaboration with Veeco, theworld leader in AFM."

Jeannine Sargent, Executive Vice President, Veeco Metrology andInstrumentation, commented, "We are pleased that our BioScope II hasbeen selected by the Institute Pasteur de Lille, a premier cellbiology research center in Europe. Veeco's goal is to remain at theforefront of worldwide cell biology research and to develop otherinnovative AFM solutions for biologic research and industrialapplications."

Francis Steenbeke, Vice President, Veeco Europe, added, "TheInstitute Pasteur de Lille is important from both an educational andresearch standpoint throughout the European bio-research andindustrial community. Establishing our bio-lab at the Lille site willmake the BioScope II technology and Veeco's applications specialistsreadily accessible to other research centers throughout Europe."

The BioScope II AFM enables novel in-situ techniques for measuringbiological samples in three dimensions, while integrated with aninverted optical or confocal microscope. It is ideal for a wide arrayof cutting-edge bioscience applications, such as spatialidentification of protein molecules and cellular structures, investigations of cell response to mechanical stimulation andnanomanipulation, and in situ pharmacological studies of live cells.Of Veeco's over 7,000 research AFMs installed at universities andnanoscience centers worldwide, approximately 1,500 are currently inuse in bioscience applications. Over 2,000 scientific papers have beenpublished in the field of bio-research citing Veeco AFMs.

About the Institute Pasteur de Lille
