Veeco Appoints Mark Munch EVP, GM, Metrology and Instrumentation

Veeco Instruments Inc. (Nasdaq: VECO) today announced that it has appointed Mark R. Munch, Ph.D., to the position of Executive Vice President, General Manager, Metrology and Instrumentation (M&I), reporting to John R. Peeler, Veeco’s Chief Executive Officer. Veeco’s M&I business, which had forecasted revenues of approximately $150 million in 2007, includes its automated Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) products for the semiconductor and data storage market, market-leading research AFMs/Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPMs) for broad-based nanomaterial and life science applications, and optical and stylus profilers for industrial and research applications. Dr. Munch, age 46, joins Veeco from Coherent Inc., where he was Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Commercial Lasers and Components (CLC) Group, which represents a substantial portion of Coherent’s $600 million in revenues and includes a number of laser product divisions for diverse markets such as medical, bioinstrumentation, and materials processing. John Peeler commented, "Mark’s strong technology background and broad experience managing multi-market, multi-product technology businesses makes him an ideal fit to run our M&I business. I believe he can help our M&I organization produce exceptional results in 2008 and beyond.” Prior to joining Coherent, Dr. Munch was CEO and President of Cooligy Inc., which, under his leadership, became a wholly owned subsidiary of Emerson Electric. Dr. Munch joined Cooligy from Corning, Inc. where he served as Division Vice President and General Manager for two product divisions in optical components as well as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Corning Photonic Technologies. Prior to Corning, Dr. Munch served in various executive positions at Tyco Corporation including those of General Manager, Vice President, and Chief Technology Officer. Earlier in his career, Mark spent ten years at Raychem Corporation in various key management positions. Mark received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University of Colorado and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from Stanford University.
