SATURDAY, JUNE 8: DEADLY DISEASE

Profile America — Saturday, June 8th.  In the first week of June 1981, the Centers for Disease Control described a new illness — which a year later was officially named acquired immune deficiency syndrome or AIDS.  The virus that causes the disease was identified in 1983 and named HIV, human immunodeficiency virus.  Since the beginning of the epidemic in 1981, more than 60 million people around the world have contracted HIV, and nearly 30 million have died as a result.  In the U.S., about 37,000 new cases are reported each year.  An estimated 491,000 Americans are currently living with the disease.  You can find more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
