TSX Snaps Modest Losing Streak, Led By Energy Stocks -- Canadian Commentary
(RTTNews) - Canadian stocks eked out modest gains, snapping a 3-day losing skid despite lukewarm interest in most sectors.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 26 points, or 0.18 percent, to 14,833.75. Energy stocks rose 1.7 percent to lead the way.
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT, POT.TO) reported better-than-expected quarterly sales, but profits were sharply lower.
Potash also narrowed its full-year 2016 earnings guidance range to $0.40-$0.45 per share. Shares were down 2.2 percent.
Barrick Gold (ABX.TO) said earning rose to $278 million, or $0.24 per share. This was higher than $131 million, or $0.11 per share, in last year's third quarter. Shares were up slightly.
Suncor Energy Inc. (SU.TO) released earnings for third quarter that declined 16% from last year. Shares rose 5.9 percent.
Cenovus (CVE.TO) posted a net loss of $251 million, or 30 cents per share, in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with a profit of $1.80 billion, or $2.16 per share, a year earlier. Shares were up fractionally.
Husky Energy Inc. (HSE.TO) revealed a $100 million quarterly loss after adjustments. Husky has also announced that Asim Ghosh will retire as president and CEO on Dec. 5. Shares slipped 1.8 percent.
His successor will be Rob Peabody, Husky's chief operating officer since 2006.
National Bank (NA.TO) expects to take a charge of about $175 mln in the fourth quarter. The bank is cutting 600 jobs. Shares were up 1.8 percent.
