TSX Flat Despite Rising Energy Stocks -- Canadian Commentary
(RTTNews) - Canadian stocks were flat Wednesday, preserving most of their weekly gains amid big news in the financial sector and a strong performance from the energy sector.
The TSX Composite Index was down 16 points to 15,126.81.
Shareholders in Home Capital Group (HCG.TO) overwhelmingly rejected Warren Buffett's bid to boost his stake in the beleaguered mortgage lender, as investors felt the deal was too sweet for the Oracle of Omaha.
Financials were up fractionally, while energy stocks jumped 2.5% as crude oil jumped near $50 a barrel.
Gold stocks fell, but Eldorado bucked the downtrend.
Greece is set to grant permits for Eldorado Gold's (ELD.TO) Olympias project this week. Shares surged up 16%.
Canopy Growth Corp. (WEED.TO) has signed an agreement with AusCann Group Holdings Ltd. to be its exclusive supplier of medical cannabis in Australia.
