TSX Ends Modestly Higher
(RTTNews) - The Canadian stock market ended modestly higher on Tuesday, led by gains in materials shares.
It was a somewhat lackluster session with investors, looking ahead to the Bank of Canada's interest rate decision and monetary policy, and reacting to U.S. inflation data, largely stayed cautious.
The benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index ended with a gain of 37.57 points or 0.19% at 20,270.65. The index moved in a tight range between 20,250.82 and 20,316.84.
Materials shares Dundee Precious Metals (DPM.TO), Kirkland Lake Gold (KL.TO), Alamos Gold (AGI.TO), Ssr Mining (SSRM.TO), Torex Gold Resources (TXG.TO), Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM.TO), Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM.TO), B2Gold Corp (BTO.TO), Barrick Gold Corp (ABX.TO), Kinross Gold (K.TO) and Franco-Nevada Corp (FNV.TO) gained 2 to 4%.
Information technology stock Tecsys Inc (TCS.TO) climbed nearly 8%. Sierra Wireless (SW.TO) and Shopify Inc (SHOP.TO) gained 2.65% and 2%, respectively.
Organigram Holdings Inc. (OGI.TO) zoomed more than 12% after reporting a sharp drop in net loss in the third quarter. The company reported third-quarter net loss of 4.0 million, compared with net loss of 89.9 million shares a year ago.
Cnooc Limited (CNU.TO), Linamar Corporation (LNR.TO), Colliers International (CIGI.TO), Lightspeed Pos (LSPD.TO) and West Fraser Timber (WFG.TO) shed 1.6 to 2.5%.
