TSX Barely Budges As Metals Weaken -- Canadian Commentary

(RTTNews) - Canadian stocks were little changed Tuesday, holding near 11-month highs after a languid session on Bay Street.

Weaker energy and metals stocks offset gains among consumer staple and tech shares.

Markets everywhere were relatively quiet in the absence of first-tier economic news or central bank comments.

Traders have turned a bit cautious amid geopolitical tensions, U.S. political uncertainty and lingering Brexit concerns.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 7.79 points, or 0.05 percent, to 14,524.61. The index had been higher in six of the seven previous sessions.

Metals stocks were down 2.5 percent today, while energy shares lost 0.75 percent.

August WTI oil was down 59 cents, or 1.3%, to settle at $44.65/bbl on Nymex.

OPEC data showed increased production from Nigeria, where militants interrupted supplies during the first half of the year.
