The MAVEN Project Receives $40,000 From United Way of Miami-Dade and Health Foundation of South Florida for Pilot Telehealth Program

MIAMI, Aug. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Two $20,000 grants have been awarded to The MAVEN Project from United Way of Miami-Dade and Health Foundation of South Florida to support the launch of a pilot Telehealth program to improve health care access by those most in need in Miami-Dade County. The MAVEN Project facilitates timely access to medical expertise by matching our national corps of engaged physician volunteers with organizations serving uninsured.

According to Dr. Laurie Green, President and founder of The MAVEN Project, "A collaboration of The MAVEN Project, the United Way of Miami-Dade, Dr. Barth Green/The University of Miami, and the Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, the Miami-Dade Telehealth Program will engage an array of volunteer physicians, clinics, leaders, organizations, and others for a common, long-term goal — to improve timely access to quality healthcare for vulnerable populations in Miami-Dade County."

She added, "Physicians — especially semi-retired and newly retired — are an untapped source of volunteers who, when paired with telemedicine technology, can remotely provide much-needed health care to medically underserved patients. We are gratified by the support from Health Foundation and the United Way to address the need for timely access to specialist consultations at free clinics."

Free clinics face numerous challenges such as financial constraints, limited resources, transient staff and difficulty providing specialty care to meet the needs of their patient population. MAVEN Project volunteer physicians will be matched with free clinics to provide consultation, teaching and mentoring for medical providers serving the uninsured, Medicaid patients and other vulnerable populations.

The MAVEN Project (Medical Alumni Volunteer Expert Network), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, improves access to quality healthcare for underserved communities by linking our corps of expert volunteer physicians to local Community Health Centers — free clinics, federally qualified health centers, and other health care organizations using telehealth technology.
