The Boston Globe Expands Thought Leadership in Sunday Editorial Section and Adds Forum for Additional Dialogue with Its Readers

The Boston Globe will expand its Sunday editorial section by adding some of the region’s most important thought leaders to its line-up of columnists and adding a new readers’ forum to include multiple views on the major issues of the day. The Globe’s expanded editorial page will begin May 9.

Joining the Globe’s op-ed lineup will be Larry Harmon and Joanna Weiss, whose columns will appear along with those of Jeff Jacoby and Joan Vennochi. Mr. Harmon will focus on issues related to the city of Boston and Ms. Weiss will write about popular culture.

The Sunday op-ed section will also offer a new readers’ forum every week with more letters to the editor as well as multiple views on major issues. Readers can also expect more pages centered on a particular theme, and visual and graphic op-eds. There will also be space for longer op-ed pieces to offer more comprehensive viewpoints on complicated and especially important issues.

"Adding more voices to the Sunday editorial page will broaden the discussion of topical issues in our community,” said Peter Canellos, editor, editorial pages, The Boston Globe. "The forum is an open dialogue the Globe is creating for its readers to offer their views and opinions at this critical time in our history, making opinion journalism even more important than ever.”

Mr. Harmon has been an editorial writer with the Globe for 18 years and formerly was the editor of the Citizen Group papers which covered the Boston neighborhoods of Brighton, Charlestown, and Chinatown, as well as the city of Brookline, Massachusetts. Ms. Weiss joined the Globe 11 years ago from the Times Picayune in New Orleans and has reported on city, state and national politics, arts, television, and popular culture. Her op-ed column began running six months ago.

On May 6, the Globe began running a new weekly op-ed column by Joshua Green, senior editor of The Atlantic. In March the Globe launched a new feature within the opinion section of Boston.com: The Angle: Stories Worth Talking About. The Angle brings together some of the most compelling pieces from The Boston Globe and opens them up to readers for further exploration and commentary.

"Expanding our editorial pages and op-ed offerings is part of our commitment to cover and facilitate conversations about important issues facing our readers, this region and the country,” said Christopher Mayer, publisher of The Boston Globe.
