Symmetricom Principal Technologist Featured Speaker at 15th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO) 2007

Winkler, principal technologist for Symmetricom’s
QoE Assurance Division, will present "Video
Quality and Beyond” at the 15th
European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO) on Tuesday, September 4,
2007 in Poznan, Poland. The lecture is part
of the session, "Quality Evaluation in Image
and Video Processing,” chaired by Paulo
Lobato Correia, Instituto Superior Técnico,
Portugal. Taking place September 3-7, 2007, EUSIPCO 2007 is the
fifteenth conference promoted by EURASIP, the European Association for
Signal Processing, and will cover all aspects of signal processing
theory and applications.

Dr. Winkler’s presentation will provide an
overview of the current state of video quality metrics, discussing the
achievements as well as shortcomings, and will also summarize the main
standardization efforts by the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG). The
presentation will then look at recent trends and developments in video
quality research, in particular the emergence of new generations of
quality metrics, compared to those focused on compression artifacts,
including comprehensive audiovisual quality measurement.
One of the world’s top experts in digital
media quality measurement, Dr. Winkler was formerly chief scientist and
co-founder of Genista Corporation, a provider of quality assurance
solutions for IPTV and mobile media. He has also held assistant
professor positions at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and
the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and has worked for
Hewlett-Packard, Siemens, German Aerospace and Andersen Consulting. Dr.
Winkler has published more than 40 papers on perceptual quality
measurement and is the author of the book, "Digital
Video Quality”. He has also been a member and
contributor of the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG) since its
foundation in 1997. Dr. Winkler holds a Master of Science in Electrical
Engineering from the University of Technology in Vienna, Austria and a
doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne
(EPFL), Switzerland.
