Sperling Medical Group Completes Florida's First MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound Tremor Treatment
ORLANDO, Fla., May 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- On May 12th, 2017, the Sperling Medical Group, an Essential Tremor Education Center alliance member, completed not just one, but two Neuravive treatments on two essential tremor patients. This marks the first successful outpatient procedure for essential tremor in Florida and the first time two tremor patients were treated on the same day. Treatment was completed using focused ultrasound technology , and both patients experienced immediate improvement between 70-95%. "The Essential Tremor Education Center is excited about the life-changing experience these two patients had at Sperling Medical Center, and I look forward to hearing many more stories like these," says Terry Newmyer, Managing Director of the Essential Tremor Education Center.
As the only Southeast treatment center offering Neuravive, the Sperling Medical Group sees a bright future using this technology. Completing both treatments in the same day demonstrates the scalability of this treatment option. Neuravive is also providing patients immediate results, which is a benefit not offered by other treatment options. One of the treated patients, Sheila Kelsey, reported, "I have a 95% improvement in my hand."
Rod Jenkins, who lives in Canada, traveled to Florida to undergo the Neuravive procedure on May 12. "It was well worth the expense, the ability to be off the medications was well worth it. I would advise [essential tremor patients] to get the procedure if they really want to get their life back," said Jenkins.
Other patients talk about the change in their quality of life since undergoing this procedure. "My signature is back to what it used to be. I can feed myself…I am not as concerned that people notice me anymore and that gives me such peace of mind," said Kelsey, who received the treatment on May 12.
The Essential Tremor Education Center's alliance is comprised of dedicated neurology professionals that aim to provide the best treatment options possible to patients living with essential tremor. Dr. Travis Tierney and Dr. Dan Sperling, both from the Sperling Medical Group, have been instrumental in the development of focused ultrasound. Dr. Tierney, Director of Neurosurgery at Sperling Medical Group, was a principal investigator in the Harvard clinical trial of MRgFUS to treat essential tremor. Dr. Sperling, Medical Director of the Sperling Medical Group, is a leader in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The Essential Tremor Education Center looks forward to their alliance members bringing more enhanced treatment options to patients suffering from essential tremor.
