Sensex Tumbles 272 Points Amid Global Selloff; Nifty Ends At 10,663

(RTTNews) - Indian shares fell on Monday to extend losses from the previous session, as weak global cues on the back of political uncertainty in the U.S. dampened investor sentiment.

The benchmark BSE Sensex gave up early gains to end the session down 271.92 points or 0.76 percent at 35,470.15 in the holiday-shortened week, while the broader Nifty index dropped 90.50 points or 0.84 percent to 10,663.50.

Hindalco, Bajaj Auto, IOC, Hero MotoCorp and JSW Steel fell 3-5 percent in the Nifty pack, while Kotak Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Wipro, TCS and Infratel climbed 1-2 percent.

The BSE and NSE will remain closed Tuesday on account of Christmas.

Globally, Asian stocks ended mixed in thin pre-Christmas trade and European markets moved lower in early trade, as investors fretted about the impact of a partial U.S. government shutdown and increasing trade tensions, with White House trade advisor Peter Navarro saying the trade war between the U.S. and China would not come to an end in near-term.

The U.S. dollar slipped as political uncertainty weighed and Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams told CNBC the U.S. central bank is open to reconsidering its views on rate hikes next year.
