Recent Court Rulings in Mass Torts: Attorneys Adjusting Strategies in Wake of 'Seminal' Decisions
NEW YORK, Aug. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The law on key issues – such as jurisdiction and preemption – in some high-stakes cases have taken unanticipated and significant turns based on recent appellate court rulings that have attorneys for plaintiffs and corporations alike adjusting their respective strategies.
Two federal decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, and one by the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, as well as two key state decisions by the New Jersey Appellate Division were handed down recently impacting our understanding of contemporary issues of jurisdiction, preemption and evidence.
Attorneys are invited to a 90-minute CLE-eligible webinar on the impact of these cases. Produced by HB Litigation Conferences, the program will take place at 2 p.m. Eastern on Sept. 18, 2017. The challenges or opportunities these decisions present to attorneys form the basis of this webinar, developed by Judge Marina Corodemus (ret.), a leading national special master in complex litigation for both Federal and State Courts. Judge Corodemus, who for a decade was the sole New Jersey Superior Court mass tort judge, was recently appointed by U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler to oversee the execution of the $300 million settlement of more than 2,000 cases brought by users of the hypertension drug Benicar. The judge is also founder and chair of the highly regarded Mass Torts Judicial Forum with Hon. Marina Corodemus (ret.), which will be held on April 23, 2018, in New York. The webinar panelists – whom Judge Corodemus considers "mass tort attorneys at the top of the practice" – will come together for a live webcast from the JAMS Resolution Center in New York to discuss what she considers to be "seminal" decisions.
The speakers are:
- Judge Marina Corodemus (ret.), Corodemus & Corodemus LLC and JAMS New York, chair and moderator
- William J. Beausoleil, Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP
- Jeffrey S. Grand, Seeger Weiss LLP
- Bruce D. Greenberg, Lite DePalma Greenberg, LLC
- Heidi Levine, Sidley Austin LLP
- Ellen Relkin, Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C.
- Alan E. Rothman, Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP
