Funding and Grants for Childhood Cancer Research

"The gap between what is needed and what is available for childhood cancer research is growing. In previous years only 4 percent of total federal cancer research dollars were designated for pediatric cancers. It is estimated that the National Cancer Institute budget will shrink by 7 percent with the most recent cuts, further impacting childhood cancer research. Additionally, a great deal of funding for research on adult cancers comes from industry, where again there is a gap for pediatric cancers. There are very few research and development efforts within the industry; some might say the risk is too great and the reward too small. Finally, over the past 20 years only two new drugs have been approved to specifically treat childhood cancers. Even for children who are cured, by the time they're 45, more than 95 percent of childhood cancer survivors will suffer from a chronic health problem resulting from treatment."

New Rules for Hospices and Long-Term Care Facilities

"The national governing body for nursing home reimbursements (The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services -- CMS) has issued new rules that will govern how hospices and long-term care facilities should provide care for patients who choose hospice care under the Medicare provisions. The purpose of these changes is to improve coordination of care, resulting in better quality of life and delivery of services for patients who select hospice care. Individuals who choose hospice care have decided to focus on comfort measures and improved quality of living. The new rules which take effect on August 26, 2013, enable patients and their loved ones to choose a particular hospice to provide end-of-life care. This new rule respects the choice of individual patients and decreases the duplication of services provided to residents in long term care facilities. The new rule is a welcome change, as it ensures that communication does not lapse between LTCs and hospices; regulations allow patients to choose a particular hospice provider; and hospice patients in LTCs will experience improve quality of life."

Blood Disorders and Pediatric Cancer

"With a child being diagnosed with cancer every three minutes worldwide, and cancer remaining the second leading cause of death of children in the U.S., exceeded only by accidents, we have our work cut out for us if we want to one day reach the 'perfect world' with a cure. Fifty years ago, only about 20 percent of children diagnosed with cancer were cured. Today, while 80 percent to 90 percent of children in developed countries diagnosed with some types of cancer are cured, there are still many types of cancers that claim the lives of nearly all children. Furthermore, among those who do survive, two out of three will live with lifelong problems such as learning disabilities, hearing loss, heart disease, infertility, secondary cancers and more. Not what you consider when you hear the word 'cure.'"
Dr. Arceci is available to discuss blood disorders and translational research in pediatric malignancies and optimizing comprehensive care for children and adolescents with cancer. He is the director of the Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and co-director of the Ron Matricaria Institute of Molecular Medicine at Phoenix Children's Hospital. He is also a professor of Pediatrics at University of Arizona College of Medicine and active at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix, AZ.
