New Glaucoma Treatment Performed by Eva I. Liang, M.D. F.A.C.S. in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, March 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Las Vegas ophthalmology practice, Center For Sight, announced today the first surgeries with XEN45 Gel Stent (Allergan, Dublin), an implant that shunts excess fluid built up in the eye, thereby reducing intraocular pressure in patients with moderate to severe glaucoma. More than 60 million people globally are affected by glaucoma that can lead to progressive optic nerve damage and resulting in vision loss and blindness, if left untreated.
According to the National Eye Institute, several large studies have shown that eye pressure is a major risk factor for optic nerve damage. In open-angle glaucoma, even though an ocular fluid drainage angle is "open", the fluid passes too slowly through a meshwork drain. When the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises to a level that may damage the optic nerve.
Current treatments for open angle glaucoma are pressure lowering eye drops, Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, (MIGS) in combination with cataract surgery, laser trabeculoplasty, trabeculectomy or tube shunt used to achieve sufficient pressure reduction. XEN was FDA approved for moderate to severe glaucoma, to be a stand-alone procedure that does not have to be done in conjunction with cataract surgery and potentially has fewer complications than trabeculectomy.
"XEN is made from a soft gelatin material, allowing it to conform to the eye's tissue, possibly minimizing issues seen with previous synthetic materials," said Dr. Liang. Results in clinical trials demonstrated lower intraocular pressure at 12 months, and patients used on average less IOP lowering drops than before XEN was implanted. Dr. Liang is the first in Nevada to offer patients the new XEN option for surgical intervention in refractory glaucoma patients.
With four convenient locations in the Las Vegas Valley, Center For Sight is a comprehensive ophthalmology center dedicated to the most compassionate, individualized, and highest standard of eye care.
