Mixed Feelings Towards GOP-controlled White House, Congress, PSRAI Survey Shows

PRINCETON, N.J., March 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- With Republicans controlling both the White House and Congress for the first time in 15 years, do Americans think the gridlock in Washington will end?  A PSRAI poll conducted in early March shows that nearly one-half of Americans (49%) expect that a lot more will get done in Washington over the next two years.  Thirty-eight percent don't think more will get done with Republicans in control of both Congress and the Presidency.  These findings are similar to a Newsweek Poll conducted in November 2002 shortly after Republicans won control of both chambers of Congress under President George W. Bush, when a majority (51%) said they thought a lot more would get done with the GOP leading both the executive and legislative branches. 

Demographic groups that are more likely to expect more accomplishments from Washington over the next two years include: 

• 89% of self-identified Republicans
• 81% of those who approve of the job that Trump is doing as president
• 62% of those living in rural areas
• 58% of White, non-Hispanics
• 55% of men

Americans are split on whether this Republican command may take the country in a too conservative direction.  While 48% say they are concerned the country may move in too conservative a direction, an equal share (47%) are not concerned.  Groups who are concerned about the prospect of the country becoming too conservative are a mirror image of those above who see more accomplishments on the way:

• 87% of self-identified Democrats
• 86% of those who disapprove of the job that Trump is doing as president
• 63% of non-whites (including Hispanics)
• 56% of women
• 52% of those living in urban or suburban areas

Methodology
The survey was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International (PSRAI). Interviewing by landline and cellular telephones occurred March 2-5, 2017 among a random sample of 1,003 U.S. adults.  Interviews were conducted in English or Spanish.  Data have been weighted to parameters from the U.S. Census Bureau.  The margin of error for results based on the complete set of weighted data is +/- 3.8 percentage points.
